A 2-vehicle crash on state Route 76 (SR-76) at Douglas Drive in Oceanside sent 9 people to the hospital on the night of Sunday, August 30, 2020. According to Patch Media Oceanside-Camp Pendleton, a sedan and pickup truck collided. Firefighters and paramedics had to free multiple trapped passengers, and 6 ambulances transported 6 adults and 2 children to local hospitals for treatment.
Later, a 911 call led authorities to another injured victim in a 7-Eleven parking lot near the scene of the accident. Investigators determined the man was injured in the crash and walked away. After complaining of pain, the man was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
The crash occurred at approximately 11:45 p.m. The circumstances of the accident are still under investigation, although a report from The San Diego Union-Tribune reveals additional information.
Journalists from the popular publication spoke to police and revealed the crash is a suspected drunk driving incident. The driver of the Dodge sedan allegedly ran a red light and slammed into the side of a Chevy Silverado pickup truck, which overturned, trapping a pregnant woman inside. Police also reported that bystanders helped free 2 children, aged 8 and 13, from the truck, and first responders freed 2 people from the sedan. Oceanside police reported there were 10 people injured, while fire officials said there were 9. The injuries “ranged from minor to serious but none appeared to be life-threatening.”
Still, if reports are correct, this entire crash could have been prevented if the 31-year old DUI suspect did not get behind the wheel while intoxicated.
