A 22-year-old man was hit by a car and killed in a fatal pedestrian accident in Oceanside, CA.

The accident occurred around 1 a.m. on Sunday, January 26th, around North Coast Highway and Sportfisher Drive in Oceanside. The victim was found unresponsive at the scene and was taken to a hospital, where he passed away.

The Oceanside Police Department identified the influence of alcohol as a possible factor in the accident. The 31-year-old driver was arrested for DUI following the incident, reported KGTV. He was booked in the Vista Detention Facility around 5:43 a.m. according to the Times of San Diego.

This recent incident in Oceanside follows a string of pedestrian accident cases in the San Diego area.

Pedestrian Accidents In Oceanside And The San Diego Area

Oceanside, and the entire San Diego area, has unfortunately been the site of several fatal pedestrian accidents in recent years.

KUSI reported on three recent fatal pedestrian accidents in the area — one in Sherman Heights, one in Mira Mesa, and one near Clairemont Mesa Boulevard and the 805 freeway. Two of the incidents were labeled as hit and run cases. The victims in these pedestrian accidents were a man in his 80s (in Mira Mesa) and a 44-year-old man (in the Clairemont Mesa Boulevard incident). The victim in the Sharman Heights case was not identified.

According to a report on pedestrian accidents in San Diego County from NBC 7, there were 44 deaths associated with pedestrian accidents during the first six months of 2019. Of the 44 deaths, approximately 6 incidents involved hit and runs.

Drivers should always assume that pedestrians will not see their vehicle coming, and drive cautiously around them. Honking the horn is a good way to alert a pedestrian to the vehicle's presence.
