An accident involving two Lime electric scooters ended in the death of one rider.
The victim, a 48-year-old man, was riding a scooter when he collided with another rider, a 22-year-old woman. The incident occurred on the Mission Beach boardwalk in San Diego on Sunday, June 23rd around 1:35 p.m. The specific location of the crash was Ocean Front Walk, in the 3300 block of the street.
The California News Wire Services reported on the story for Patch News.
Robert Heims, of the San Diego city police, described the accident by saying the riders were “adjacent to each other when for an unknown reason their bodies collided and they both lost control.” In the collision, the man and woman were both thrown onto the boardwalk. Both of the people involved in the accident sustained some cuts and scrapes on their legs. The man expressed that he was experiencing chest pain, and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The hospital staff later pronounced him dead.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner is still evaluating the incident and investigating the cause of death. Officials reported that neither rider was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the collision.
The Dangers Of Electric Scooters
The incident in San Diego was hardly the first involving electric scooters, which function through smartphone apps where users can pay for rides and report when their rental is no longer in use. Lime is just one brand that pioneered the scooter craze, in addition to other companies like Bird and Lyft and Uber's own offerings. Since the scooters began appearing in cities nationwide, injuries related to the vehicles has been constant — the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reported an accident rate of 14.3 injuries for every 100,000 rides.
