The Serious Consequences of Bicycle-Vehicle Collisions

Posted by Russell S. Kohn, Esq. | Jul 24, 2026 | 0 Comments

Cycling is a popular way to commute, exercise, and enjoy the outdoors throughout San Diego County. Unfortunately, despite sharing the road with motor vehicles, bicyclists remain among the most vulnerable users of our roadways.

Our firm is currently representing bicyclists who suffered serious injuries after being struck by a motor vehicle which crossed into the bike lane. What began as a routine bike ride quickly became a traumatic event that resulted in significant medical treatment, lost time from work, and difficult recovery.

Unlike occupants of motor vehicles, bicyclists have little protection when a collision occurs. Even at relatively low speeds, a crash can cause devastating injuries, such as spinal injuries, broken ribs, punctured lungs, and permanent scarring. Many victims require emergency transportation, hospitalization, surgery, physical therapy, and ongoing medical care long after the collision. In some cases, injuries prevent victims from returning to work or the activities that they once enjoyed.

Many bicycle collisions occur because drivers fail to pay attention to their surroundings. Distracted driving, unsafe lane changes, speeding, and drivers turning directly into the path of a bicyclist are among the most common causes of serious bicycle accidents. In many cases, these crashes are entirely preventable. California law requires motorists to share the road safely with bicyclists. As stated in California Vehicle Code 21760, motorists must follow the Three Feet for Safety Act, drivers must maintain a three foot buffer when passing a bicyclist in the same direction. This law was enacted to reduce preventable bicycle crashes and protect vulnerable road users.

Distracted driving continues to be one of the leading causes of serious bicycle collisions throughout California. Every time a driver diverts their attention from the roadway even for just a few seconds they significantly increase the risk of striking a bicyclist. Looking down to read or send a text message, checking social media, changing music, or responding to a notification may seem harmless, but those few moments of inattention can have life-altering consequences. California Vehicle Code section 23123 prohibits drivers from using a handheld wireless telephone while operating a motor vehicle. The purpose of this law is to keep drivers focused on the road and reduce preventable collisions. Despite these legal restrictions, distracted driving remains a common factor in many accidents involving bicyclists.
